Infant Car Seats Recalled by Britax Due to Laceration and Choking Hazards

Name of Product: Chaperone Infant car seats

Units: About 23,000

Importer: Britax Child Safety Inc., of Charlotte, N.C.

Hazard: The harness chest clip can break and pose a laceration hazard. Due to its small size it also poses a choking hazard.

Incidents/Injuries: The firm has received four reports of the chest clip breaking. Injuries from three reports included minor lacerations and scratches to arms and a finger; and one report involved an infant placing the clip in his mouth.

Description: The recall includes Chaperone infant car seats with model numbers E9L69N9 (Moonstone), E9L69P2 (Red Mill), E9L69P3 (Savannah) and E9L69P5 (Cowmooflage) sold in the U.S. All recalled models were manufactured between April 2009 and May 2010. The white serial label with the seat’s serial number, model number, and manufacture date can be found on the underside of the car seat.

Sold at: Mass and independent retailers nationwide and on the Britax website from June 2009 to October 2010 for about $230.

Rollerblade USA Recalls to Repair Inline Skates Due to Risk of Injury

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, in cooperation with the firm named below, today announced a voluntary recall of the following consumer product. Hazard: The frame mounting bolts and wheel axle bolts can be loose on new skates. Loose wheels or frames on the skates can cause the rider to fall, posing a risk of injury.

Incidents/Injuries: Rollerblade USA has received 31 reports of loose bolts, including one report of a fall resulting in minor injuries that required medical attention.

Incidents/Injuries: CPSC has received one report of a near strangulation involving a 2-year-old boy who became entangled in the reins at his neck. The boy’s mother freed him without injury.

Description: This recall involves horse-on-a-stick toys with a bridle and reins. The toys are filled with polyester fiber and have a fluffy mane. The horse’s ears are embroidered with the words “PRESS HERE” in red. The horse makes neighing and galloping sounds when the ears are pressed.

Sold at: Love’s Travel Stop and Country stores nationwide from May 2010 through July 2010 for about $6.

Rocking Horse Depot Recalls to Repair Rocking Horse Toys Due to Strangulation Hazard

Hazard: The reins on the rocking horse bridle are long enough to form a loop around a child’s head and neck, posing a strangulation hazard to young children.

Incidents/Injuries: CPSC has received one report of a near strangulation incident involving a 21-month old girl who became entangled in the reins at her neck. The girl’s parents freed her without injury.

Description: This recall involves Rocking Horse Depot’s small, medium and large rocking horses with bridles. The rocking horse has a hardwood frame and is covered with synthetic hide. Each rocking horse has fluffy mane and tail, and a leather Rocking Horse Depot emblem on the right side of the saddle.

Sold at: RockingHorseDepot.com from November 2006 through December 2009 for between $105 and $185.

Strangulation Death of a Child Prompts Recall of Roman Shades, Roll-Up Blinds, and Roller Blinds by Hanover Direct/Domestications

Expands previous recall of Roman shades. Hanover Direct/Domestications has added its name to the retailers joining the voluntary recall announced in December 2009 of ALL Roman shades and roll-up blinds.

Name of Product: Roman shades, roll-up blinds and roller blinds

Units: About 495,000 Roman shades and 28,500 roller/roll-up blinds (about 90,000 Roman shades were recalled in October 2009)

Importer: Hanover Direct Inc., (also known as Domestications, The Company Store, and Company Kids) of Weehawken, N.J.

Hazards:

Roman Shades: Strangulations can occur when a child places his/her neck between the exposed inner cord and the fabric on the backside of the blind or when a child pulls the cord out and wraps it around his/her neck.

Roll-up Blinds: Strangulations can occur if the lifting loops slide off the side of the blind and a child's neck becomes entangled on the free-standing loop or if a child places his/her neck between the lifting loop and the roll-up blind material.

Roller Blinds: Strangulations can occur if the blind's continuous loop bead chain or continuous loop pull cord is not attached to the wall or the floor with the tension device provided and a child's neck becomes entangled in the free-standing loop.

Incidents/Injuries:

Roman Shades: CPSC received a new report of the death of a 22-month-old boy in Cedar Falls, Iowa who was found hanging by his neck from the outer pull cords of a Roman shade in May 2010. The outer pull cords were knotted at the bottom. He was rescued by his father but died later in the hospital. In March 2008, a 2-year-old boy from Ocean View, Delaware climbed up on a toy chest to look out of a window and became entangled in the inner cords of a Roman shade. His parents removed the cord. No permanent injuries were sustained. This incident prompted a previous recall.

Roll-up Blinds: None reported.

Roller Blinds: None reported.

Description: This recall involves all styles of Roman shades with inner cords, all styles of roll-up blinds, and roller blinds that do not have a tension device. A tension device is intended to be attached to the continuous loop bead chain or continuous loop pull cord and installed into the wall or floor.

Sportcraft Recalls Pogo Sticks Sold Exclusively at The Sports Authority Due to Risk of Serious Injury

Name of Product: Classic Sport Super Bounce Pogo Sticks

Units: About 3,100

Distributor: Sportcraft Ltd., of Budd Lake, N.J.

Hazard: The aluminum rivets on the pogo stick’s frame tubes can break and cause the support clamp to detach and release the spring, posing fall and laceration hazards to consumers.

Incidents/Injuries: Sportcraft has received three reports of incidents with the pogo sticks, including two reports of injuries to the consumers’ inner thigh and hands requiring medical attention.

Description: This recall involves Classic Sport Super Bounce pogo sticks. The pogo sticks are silver and blue with “Classic Sport” printed on the front. This recall involves pogo sticks manufactured in February 2010 that have Sportcraft identification number 4112777F19414-02/10 printed on a tracking label on the base of the foot pedals.

Sold exclusively at: The Sports Authority stores nationwide from April 2010 through October 2010 for about $40.

CPSC Educates New Parents on Safe Babywearing
Infant suffocation deaths in slings prompt renewed effort to warn moms and dads

WASHINGTON, D. C. - Infant slings and wraps have been used for thousands of years in many different cultures. For many parents across the United States, “babywearing” promotes a positive bond between child and parent. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) wants to make sure that parents and caregivers are aware of important safety information related to the proper use of slings.

CPSC is taking this opportunity to urge everyone to use slings and wraps safely, as CPSC has identified 14 infant suffocation deaths with sling-style carriers over the past 20 years. After reviewing numerous cases, child safety experts at CPSC have determined that parents with infants younger than four months of age, premature, low-birthweight babies, and babies with colds and respiratory problems should take extra care in using a sling, including consulting their pediatrician.

Suffocation/asphyxiation can occur when babies are contained entirely within the pouch of a sling with their face, including nose and mouth, pressed against the adult’s body, blocking their breathing.

Suffocation can occur within minutes.

Because of the nature of the product and its use, some slings tend to keep an infant in a curled, chin-to-chest position, which can interfere with breathing. When an infant is in the chin-to-chest position, suffocation can occur. Both scenarios are serious concerns to CPSC. Many of the babies who died in slings were twins in separate slings and infants with breathing issues.

CPSC recommends that parents and caregivers:

• Make sure you can see your baby’s face or eyes in the sling and that your baby can see you. Also, you should place the baby’s face at or above the rim of a sling or wrap so that their face is visible.
• After nursing your baby, change the baby’s position in the sling, so that the baby’s face is at or above the rim of a sling or wrap and that their face is visible and clear of fabric and the mother’s body. You should be vigilant about frequently checking the baby in a sling.

A new voluntary consensus standard for slings is being worked on by ASTM International. This is a positive step toward providing manufacturers with an effective safety standard.

This warning is not intended to characterize all slings as being dangerous to babies. CPSC has identified (1) specific situations that can pose a risk of serious harm to babies, and (2) simple safety tips that we hope the babywearing community can share with new parents.

Children’s Hooded Jackets and Sweatshirts with Drawstrings Recalled By VOS Sports Due To Strangulation Hazard

Distributor: VOS Sports Inc., City of Industry, Calif.

Hazard: The children’s hooded sweatshirts have a drawstring through the hood and/or waist that can pose a strangulation or entrapment hazard to children. In February 1996, CPSC issued guidelines which were incorporated into an industry voluntary standard in 1997, to help prevent children from strangling or getting entangled on neck and waist drawstrings in upper garments, such as jackets or sweatshirts.

Incidents/Injuries: None reported.

Description: This recall involves all children’s hooded sweatshirts and nylon hooded jackets with drawstring sold under the brand name “VOS Sports.” The sweatshirt and jackets were sold in assorted sizes including S-M or L and in up to 14 colors. “VOS Sports” and “RN#94353” are printed on the sewn-in label.

Bassettbaby Recalls to Repair Drop-Side Cribs Due to Entrapment, Suffocation and Fall Hazards

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, in cooperation with the firm named below, today announced a voluntary recall of the following consumer product. Consumers should stop using recalled products immediately unless otherwise instructed. It is illegal to resell or attempt to resell a recalled consumer product.

Name of Product: Bassettbaby drop-side cribs with external plastic hardware

Units: About 90,000

Manufacturer: Bassett Furniture Industries, Inc., of Bassett, Va.

Hazard: The cribs' drop-side rail can malfunction, detach or otherwise fail, causing part of the drop side to detach from the crib. When a drop-side rail partially detaches, it creates a space between the drop-side and the crib mattress. An infant or toddler's body can become entrapped in the space, which can lead to strangulation and/or suffocation. A child also can fall out of the crib. Drop-side incidents also can occur due to incorrect assembly and age-related wear and tear.

Incidents/Injuries: The firm and CPSC are aware of 18 reported incidents in which drop-sides malfunctioned or detached from the crib. No injuries were reported. In one of the incidents a child became entrapped between the mattress and the drop-side. In three of the incidents children fell out of the cribs. The firm also has received 154 reports of drop-side hardware breaking during shipment, assembly or use.

Description: The recalled cribs are wood with a metal mattress support and have a drop side with external plastic hardware. The cribs were sold in a variety of finishes. A label is attached to the footboard or headboard with the names "Bassettbaby" or "Bassett Furniture Industries, Inc." as well as the model number, production date and other information. On some older models the manufacturer's name appears on a separate label.

Note: This recall does not include non drop-side cribs.

Sold at: Children's product stores, and other retailers nationwide and on-line from January 2000 through August 2010 for between about $200 and $500.

Manufactured in: China, Croatia, Slovenia, Taiwan and Vietnam

Remedy: Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled drop-side cribs and contact Bassettbaby for a free kit that will immobilize the drop side. In the meantime, parents are urged to find an alternate, safe sleeping environment for the child, such as a bassinet, play yard or toddler bed depending on the child's age.

Important Message from CPSC: CPSC reminds parents not to use any crib with missing, broken or loose parts. Make sure to tighten hardware from time to time to keep the crib sturdy. When using a drop-side crib, parents should check to make sure the drop side or any other moving part operates smoothly. Always check all sides and corners of the crib for parts separating that can create a gap and entrap a child. In addition, do not try to repair any side of the crib. Babies have died in cribs where repairs were attempted by caregivers. Crib age is a factor in safety. At a minimum, CPSC staff recommends that you not use a crib that is older than 10 years. Many older cribs may not meet current voluntary standards and can have a variety of safety problems. Check if your crib has been recalled at www.cpsc.gov
