Make mom more comfortable

Here are some ideas for dads to help mom feel more comfortable in pregnancy:

  • Rub her feet and hands: Doing a hand or foot massage can help relive a lot of tension and give you some quiet time to talk.
  • Clean the bathroom: This might sound like something that is very low priority, but who wants to throw up in a dirty toilet or bend down to clean the bottom of the bath tub?. This is one of the best things a partner can do.
  • Show interest: Discussing baby names for the umpteenth time, but it is important to her and ultimately you. Go to appointments when you can, if you cannot make all the prenatal visits be sure to make it to the big ones, like the first heartbeat and the ultrasounds.
  • Take her out to dinner: Remember to spend time as a couple.
  • Take childbirth classes: Do not worry about turning green or looking silly. These classes will help you tremendously once she is in labor. A good class, should prepare your for anything along the the way. It also gives you a chance to ask questions.
  • Fill the gas tank: Sounds silly, but the fumes can make her feel ill, and are not good for her, or your baby.
  • Read a book: It does not have to be a high tech serious book, but showing her you have interest on your own pregnancy can ease her fears. There are also many web sites designed for dads.
  • Let her nap!: If mom is exhausted an hour nap when she comes home can make a world of difference, as could sleeping in on the weekend. You might even take it one step further, and provide breakfast in bed.
  • Feel the baby: You have heard it more than once, " Just put your hand right here..." All of sudden she reports that the baby has stopped moving now. Try resting your hand on her belly during TV time, or while you are lying in bed. Chances are, the longer you leave it there, the more likely you are to be rewarded with the thumps and flutters.
  • Keep things running smoothly: This can be a variety of things; from helping to pay the bills, to arranging childcare for an afternoon off. Allow her to have some time alone, where she can relax and do what she wants like read , nap, swim, etc.
