Bethesda House provides emergency assistance for families and individuals that are homeless or living in poverty. Services include, but are not limited to clothing, laundry facilities, phone, mail boxes, food pantry and a safe haven/drop-in center for socialization. Bethesda house also provides a 3pm meal (Mon-Fri).
Guests also have access to Legal Aid, GED Classes, Women’s Group, Food Stamp Screening , Parents Anonymous, AIDS Outreach, and a Nutrition Group. All of these services are free and on-site.
Bethesda House also offers Case Management services for assistance with housing, employment, and representative payee programs, as well as referrals to other agencies. Bethesda House hosts a free medical clinic on Thursdays (9am to Noon) for individuals without health insurance.

New Faith Family Center

12-18 month residential program for women and children; Faith based – Christian; Recovery services include: substance abuse, domestic violence, homelessness, job preparation, computer skills, GED, life skills, anger management, women’s issues, parenting classes, free clinic, medical care, and spiritual support. Applicants must have a personal interview and complete intake process to be accepted. Housing is apartment based.

The Family Life Center works to assist single women and women with children to develop a healthy interdependence with their families, service providers, churches and the community-at-large in a manner that dignifies and strengthens the individual, the family, and the community. Offers Emergency Dorms- two week stays for women in transition with no children; Restorative Justice Apartments-a one year stay for women involved in Drug Court, Probation, or Parole; and Family Life Apartments- a one year stay for women with children.

Preventative dental care to children in 25 elementary schools in Albany and Rensselaer Counties. Services include oral health education, screenings, cleanings, fluoride, sealants, and referral support for restorative services. Free services to children in eligible schools. The SICM Food ProgramProvides emergency food to individuals in need up to four times over a 12-month period. The food room is located on the corner of Lafayette and Chapel Streets, in the First United Methodist Church. It is open Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings and also Tuesday and Thursday mornings during the last week of each month, when need is greatest. Call Mary Rainey at 346-4445.

JOBS etc.A neighborhood-based job readiness and placement center at 924 Albany Street, in the Christ Family Fellowship Church “Tuesday at 10” weekly meetings feature local employers talking about job opportunities and required qualifications. Also offers help with resumes, transportation issues and child care options.
Housing Task Force-Seeks positive change on housing and neighborhood development issues. Also administers a revolving security deposit loan fund.
Summer Lunch Program-Provides a noontime meal to thousands of youth in city parks and church sites. The program relies on volunteers from congregations and community groups.
Appliance Matching-Links people seeking to donate large appliances and those needing them.
Other programs include Computers for Kids, the Hamilton Hill Forum, Community Supported Agriculture, Schenectady County Embraces Diversity, the Emmett Street Initiative, the Schenectady Committee for Social Justice, and the Community Crisis Network.
