All WIC participants must have family incomes below 185% poverty guidelines and demonstrate nutritional risk based on criteria such as anemia, inadequate diet, or abnormal weight.

The WIC Program is designed to prevent health problems caused by inadequate nutrition. It serves as an adjunct to good health care during critical times of a family’s growth and development. Participants are provided food packages tailored to their needs. Participants are prescribed vouchers to be redeemed at local grocery stores. WIC foods include milk, cheese, infant formula, eggs, cereal, juice, and peanut butter. In addition, WIC parents participate in health and nutrition counseling – including smoking, alcohol, and drug abuse prevention – to foster responsible nutrition and health choices. This year, 2007, marks the 33th year of WIC operations. WIC will serve more than six million people as it begins its third decade.
